CSP Pacific’s RoboSign Stop/Go temporary traffic control system provides a quick and simple solution for controlling traffic through a temporary works site and, in April this year, was accepted by the NZ Transport Agency and listed in CoPTTM Section I-19.
In order to see where the RoboSign could be effective, Tristan Thian, Traffic Management Operations Manager from Fulton Hogan Christchurch, agreed to put the RoboSign on a project to put it through its paces.
“We decided to trial CSP Pacific’s RoboSign on a low volume road initially to see how it worked for us,” says Tristan. “Work was required on several bridges that cross the new Central Plains Water (CPW) irrigation water races. We had to close one lane at a time on some of the bridges to carry out work on the expansion joints. We used the RoboSigns at either end of the bridge to traffic manage the single lane while our teams worked on the other lane of the bridge.”
Each RoboSign unit consists of a battery powered base box topped with a pole-mounted CoPTTM compliant Stop/Go board. Only one operator is required to control the traffic flow at both ends instead of the traditional two for handheld signs. A wireless signal is used to link the two RoboSign units with a remote control held by the operator. Please note that the RoboSign operator must have a clear line of sight between the two ends of the worksite.
“We found the RoboSign very useful and received some good feedback from the general public,” adds Tristan. “They were easy to see for motorists and it was handy not to have staff standing out in the cold and rain all day. On some days our teams were working for up to 12 hours, which is pretty hard on the traffic control guys who are just standing there all day in all climates.”
“Motorists obeyed the signs with only one exception, so all in all it went well. The other thing I like about using these signs is that not having my guys on the road means there is less chance of them being injured. It's a much safer option for my team.”
Following the positive trial run of the RoboSign units Tristan has booked them in for another job. “We are certainly keen to use them again.”
