Anyone living in Auckland right now will agree that there’s an awful lot of change going on around the city. Whether it be inner city projects such as the City Rail link, the sprint to tidy up certain streets because of the fast approaching America’s Cup or major roading projects such as Puhoi to Warkworth (NX2) and the Western Interceptor - a large water main project for Watercare. There’s a lot happening!
Chances are that as you are negotiating the road works, large numbers of traffic redirections and orange cones, you will be passing many of the hundreds of Hire barriers CSP Pacific has out on Auckland’s roads redirecting traffic and keeping people safe. In high demand is CSP Pacific’s new HV2 BARRIER – the first and only unanchored steel barrier to successfully be crash tested to MASH TL-4.
“Our new HV2 BARRIER has been really well received by many Traffic Managers on various projects around the country,” says Jeff Berriman, North Island Manager for CSP Pacific.
The 18.5km Pūhoi to Warkworth project will extend the four-lane Northern Motorway from the Johnstone’s Hill tunnels to just north of Warkworth. It is the first stage of the Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Wellsford.
Under a contract, the Northern Express Group (NX2) is responsible for the design and build plus the management and maintenance of the Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway for 25 years following the expected five-year construction period when it will be handed back to Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
Roy Mckinnon is the Project Traffic Manager for NX2 and has had his hands full keeping the traffic moving on this massive project while it progresses.
“As we have had very little rain in the last 45-50 days we are very much on track to move the 3.5 million cubic metres of soil which is required. The public can’t really see behind the hill but we are already putting down some pavement on sections of the new motorway.”
Roy says he’s been a customer of CSP Pacific for many years for many different projects and events. “We are using CSP Pacific’s new HV2 BARRIER on the off ramp into Orewa heading south. I am using HV2 BARRIER because it's a good product and it’s easy to install. Its main advantage is if we are regularly making changes to the lane layout as the locking pin is easy to remove and then the system is easily placed in its new location. It really is very good.
“I looked after the night install of the HV2 BARRIER System at Johnsons Hill and was extremely impressed with the ease and speed in which it was deployed,” Steve Kelly, Traffic Superintendent for NX2.
The Northern Interceptor

Commencing in 2017 and being built in stages, this pipe will redirect wastewater from the north-west to Watercare’s Rosedale Wastewater Treatment Plant. Construction for Phase 1 began in January 2019 and has been combined with watermain improvement works across the upper Waitematā Harbour.
Aum Sukasem, Graduate Traffic Engineer for Higgins Contractors Ltd, is responsible for traffic management on this project and is also using CSP Pacific’s HV2 BARRIER.
“I am using HV2 safety barrier because it is tested as MASH TL-3 and TL-4 which is fit for purpose at Squadron Drive on ramp for an Lv3 road at 100km/hr,” says Aum. “The deflection at 1.5m is low for a free standing temporary barrier if we compare it with other systems, plus the radius is also flexible.”
