The main geometric design reference for the New Zealand State Highway roading network is Austroads Guide to Road Design Part 6: Roadside Design, Safety and Barriers (released in 2009). This document has superseded the Transport Agency State Highway Geometric Design Manual (SHGDM). Please note that the SHGDM may remain a reference document for some projects, depending on the stage in their life-cycle, for further clarification please contact New Zealand Transport Agency.

Austroads Part 6: Roadside Design, Safety and Barriers provides the information to users to understand the following principles:

  • Design of safe roads
  • Hazard identification
  • Risk assessment of roadside hazards
  • Need for treatment of hazards
  • Appropriate treatment if required

Part 6: Roadside Design, Safety and Barriers should be read in conjunction with other Austroads guides, namely:

  • Part 6A: Pedestrian and Cyclist Paths
  • Part 6B: Roadside Environment
