The new East Taupo Arterial (ETA) route which runs along the eastern outskirts of Taupo from Wairakei to the Airport is an alternative route for SH 1. The objective of the 16km of new highway is to reduce the number of heavy vehicles travelling through the Taupo CBD and along the lakefront, reducing traffic congestion during the holiday season and events. The new route was opened to traffic on 8 October - five months ahead of schedule - and includes a revolutionary solar power lighting column - a joint venture between CSP Pacific, Advanced Lighting Technologies NZ Ltd and Fulton Hogan Ltd, Taupo.


“We were asked by Craig Brooks, from Fulton Hogan, if we were able to design and supply a 7m ground planted solar powered column for a bypass road as the electrical services were too far away from where the column was to be installed,” said Lawrence Amos, Product Support Engineer for CSP Pacific. “We contacted lighting suppliers that we had previously worked with. Advanced Lighting Technologies advised that they had a product that would be suitable for this situation. From that point on the job was a collaboration between the two companies.”

“We worked with Lawrence at CSP Pacific to come up with a suitable column design, including the outreach and spigot, to suit our solar panel,” said Mark Kirkham, Business Development Manager for Advanced Lighting Technologies NZ Ltd. “Our companies work well together and as a result we have a happy customer.”

The new American solar lighting system comprises Carmanah 1710 solar panels with BetaLED LEDway LED luminaries and is the first of these units to be installed in New Zealand.

“This system has been configured to operate on a ‘split-night’ operating profile in order to conserve power - full output for 2 hours after dusk, then on motion sensor (dimmed to 25% light if no motion is sensed/full light when motion is sensed) through the night then reverting to full output 1 hr before dawn,” adds Mark. ‘”It’s a very advanced system.”
“The project turned out to be very successful,” adds Lawrence. “As a result of this project we have already had an enquiry to supply columns to Hastings City Council. It looks like the collaboration between our two companies could continue.”
