Principal: Christchurch City Council
Consultant: Fulton Hogan Ltd
Contractor: Opus International Consultants
Product: Multiplate

The access to Okains Bay from Summit Road on the Banks Peninsula is via a single access road. This road included a very old dilapidated bridge on the verge of collapse.

Opus International Consultants were asked to design a solution to the collapsing bridge. The installation of a culvert was recommended, as a more cost effective alternative to the construction of a new bridge. The Christchurch City Council approved Opus Consultants’ design requiring the installation of a culvert.

"Culverts can be pre-installed and backfilled almost to road level allowing the existing bridge to remain in place during construction," Andrew Burn from Humes explains. “This allowed the access to Okains Bay to remain open until the last possible moment, when the old bridge could be removed and the culvert backfill could be finished and the road sealed”.

The work was to be completed before the end of the summer 2007 and the onset of unsettled winter weather. The contract was awarded to Fulton Hogan Ltd in February 2007.

The Project

Initially the design required “Aluflo” a Humes corrugated drainage pipe be used, but due to the long lead times to import the aluminum coil to manufacture this product and the time pressures on the project, an alternative product was requested by the Christchurch City Council.

Multiplate, a CSP Pacific product, was put forward as an alternative. Norman Biddle, Joe Habets, Ian Rowland from CSP Pacific and Andrew Burn from Humes sold the concept to Paul Omeara of Fulton Hogan, offering complete support throughout the installation. Opus Consultants and the Christchurch City Council approved the change of product and the plans were amended.

Paul said that the commitment from the staff of CSP Pacific and Humes was amazing. “When do you see a sales representative and an engineer from the supplier getting in on a job and help with the installation? They have completely backed their product. 30m of 2.55 diameter Multiplate were installed in 3 ½ days. It surprised us with our limited experience of installing Multiplate culverts at how easy and quick it was to install. We are very pleased and so is the Christchurch City Council”.

“I would not hesitate to use or recommend the use of Multiplate and CSP Pacific again for future projects.”
