Brifen Wire Rope Safety Barrier

Introduction

The Brifen Wire Rope Safety Barrier (WRSB) is a high tension cable barrier and is distinctive due to its interwoven rope construction. Brifen's patented interweaving of the wire ropes are used to contain and redirect errant vehicles by preventing the vehicles from crossing the barrier or deflecting back into the traffic flow. It is designed to absorb the energy of an impact, minimising injury to passengers and damage to vehicles. Due to the weaves interaction with the post, Brifen can achieve tighter rdius than other products at the same post spacing. A versatile system, it can also be installed for retrofit applications on a slope of up to 1V:4H.


Brifen Wire Rope Safety Barrier has been tested to the guidelines in NCHRP 350 TL-3 And TL-4 for longitudinal cable barriers. The system is in service in over 40 countries with over 5000km installed worldwide. In New Zealand, more than 140km of the Brifen system is in service with some of the earlier installations in continuous service for well over 20 years.

Specifications

  • All posts are hot dip galvanised and white powder coated
  • Cable –  Pre-stretched 19mm 4 x 7 strand
  • Cable heights (to the centre) 930mm, 780mm, 630mm and 480mm
  • Typical line post footing piles are 300 diameter X 750mm
  • Concrete to be 25MPa
  • Tensioned to 22.25kN for the Average Annual Daily Temperature (AADT). This tension may vary depending on air  temperature at time of installation.

Standards and Acceptance

Brifen Wire Rope Safety Barrier have been designed and tested to meet the evaluation criteria of NCHRP 350 Test Level 3 and 4.

Accepted by NZTA for use on New Zealand State Highways.
