Roadside hazards, related to bridges and bridge approaches, are generally shielded by road safety barrier installations. The most common bridge barrier systems are semi-rigid NCHRP 350 TL-3 W-section systems and TL-4 Thrie-Beam systems mounted on system specific surface mount bridge posts. These systems have been deemed to comply by the New Zealand Transport Agency at these containment levels based on in service performance and engineering reviews.

All existing Brifen Terminal End installations, within New Zealand, that were installed prior to 2014 are required to be upgraded to the tested TL-3 specification - if impacted or the installation is being upgraded or modified.

These terminals have been superseded for a number of years and some of the components are no longer available. This upgrade will also bring these terminal ends up to current NCHRP350 TL-3 specifications. This upgrade procedure has been formally accepted by the New Zealand Transport Agency.
