Bulls Gorge on SH10 in Northland has been the site of many accidents over the years, with Police frequently requesting that motorists drive defensively when travelling through the area. This crash record, and a number of fatalities prompted action from the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA). Work began in late 2010 to improve the sharp corners and steep gradients through the gorge, by replacing them with a smoother, wider highway with improved shoulders. CSP Pacific’s Armorwire Wire Rope Barrier System was chosen as one of the finishing touches to the realignment.

ArmorZone™ TL-2 Plastic Barrier is made up of plastic units joined together using a steel pin connector and filled with water, providing positive work zone barrier protection to temporary construction sites and other roadside activities. It is available for sale or hire.  ArmorZone™ TL-2 Plastic Barrier meets the evaluation criteria of NCHRP 350 Test Level 2 (TL-2) for a longitudinal barrier.

“ArmorZone™ is an extremely versatile barrier,” says David Russell, Hire Manager for CSP Pacific. “With long term projects companies can consider purchasing the barriers as opposed to hiring them. We are here either way to assist in making the right decision for your project.”

New subdivisions in Upper Hutt have prompted serious safety concerns for residents who are often required to walk on the road due to a lack of footpaths. This was the case in Brown Owl on SH2 where, after many submissions from the public, the Upper Hutt City Council commissioned work to create a footpath and cycleway for use by local residents.

With considerable earth works required to carve out the bank sufficiently to create a walk and cycleway, contractors Linked Earthworks were happy when Establishment Management Services (EMS) hired CSP Pacific’s ArmorZone™ TL-2 Plastic Barrier to protect the work zone while their people worked on the active state highway.

NZTA’s Western Corridor has been identified by the government as part of the seven roads of national significance (RoNS) and is critical for supporting economic growth, reducing congestion, improving safety and managing forecasted traffic growth on SH1 in Christchurch.

With work on an active highway taking place over approximately 2kms, the safety of the HEB staff and road-users is paramount. Traffic management is a major part of this 27 month project, with HEB looking at various systems to create a safe work zone for their people. In addition, the length of the project meant they had to consider the pros and cons of purchasing versus hiring the 250 barriers required.

To ensure that installations of the Nu-Guard 31™ system on hard surfaces, such as concrete footpaths or thick layers of asphalt, are correct, CSP Pacific has produced a technical note detailing installation procedures. Incorrect installation of Nu-Guard 31™ on hard surfaces with no flexibility can result in the Nu-Guard 31™ post snapping in a vehicle impact rather than yielding at ground level as designed.
