Marine Parade’s iconic row of Norfolk pines in Napier were first planted in the 1890’s and have become the subject of controversy over the years due to the safety hazard they pose to motorists. After 15 fatalities and many more serious injuries over the last 30 years, CSP Pacific’s Armorwire Safety Barrier was chosen for the site for its safety record and because it was the least intrusive of the wire rope barrier systems available.

A new and ambitious LED replacement programme being undertaken by Auckland Transport will see the upgrade of 44,000 high pressure sodium streetlights to energy efficient LED luminaires over a four year period in the Auckland area. The project also includes a pole replacement programme which will see all old concrete poles upgraded to brand new streetlight columns - including a number of 6 or 8m Oclyte® Streetlight Columns from CSP Pacific.

CSP Pacific’s latest Barrier Field Manual is now available online. The updated version includes the latest drawings from CSP Pacific and the New Zealand Transport Agency. Information has also been included to assist in the design and installation of both proprietary and public domain barrier systems. This includes the Transport Agency’s ground beam detail and the omission of 1 or 2 posts when installing Nu-Guard® 31.

The Centre for Accident Research & Road Safety - Queensland (CARRS-Q) recently published the findings of the first in-depth analysis of safety at roadwork sites in Australia. Although this research is Australian based, the learnings can be applied to New Zealand roadworks sites. Of key interest was the noted effectiveness of Variable Message Signs and Temporary Traffic Lights to reduce speed at roadworks sites - speed being the major contributor to accidents.
